The gold embroidery

A small embroidery of a figurine was found under the choir in Uvdal stave church. The figurine has probably been fitted on a textile or cloth used for rituals in the church. It might be showing an angel playing with a bow on a string instrument.

The base is made from wool in canvas binding and has most likely been coloured red. The embroidery is done with a gold thread where beaten gold is wrapped around a silk or linen thread. The outline is marked by a simple couching and laid seam in silk.
