Mumbling bags

So-called “pjotreposer” have been found underneath the floors in Uvdal Stave Church. Pjotreposer, or “mumbling bags,” are small tied-up pieces of fabric created for the purpose of casting a curse on someone. The idea of supernatural powers existing within the church space is highlighted with the use of pjotreposer. Perhaps they were placed there to eliminate a curse? Or to increase the power of the curse?

“Pjotre” means “to mumble.” People would mumble their intent into the bag and sometimes add a few trinkets to complete the curse. Then the bag would be tossed on the ground in front of the victim or placed within the house walls of someone's home.
